Issued : Friday 16 September, 2011
Labour TD Michael Conaghan has welcomed news that €80,000 has been made available for Smarter Travel projects in the Drimnagh area.
The Department of Tourism, Transport and Sport has made €80,000 available to fund three Smarter Travel projects in the Drimnagh area. Smarter Travel is a policy which hopes to bring about a sustainable, environmentally sound travel and transport system.
The projects which have been given the go-ahead are as follows:
-Provision and launch of a Slí na Sláinte route in Lansdowne Valley Park.
-Route enhancement works between the Drimnagh and Crumlin Hospital.
-Provision of Cycle parking around the area.
Welcoming the news, Deputy Conaghan said "Since the opening of the Luas, the community in Drimnagh has really bought into the idea of Smarter Travel, and the use of public transport has increased greatly. Drimnagh Community Residents Group, local schools and other community organisations have shown great enthusiasm for this project, and have put a great deal of work into making submissions.
"The award of this funding is a recognition of this hard work, and these three projects represent a first step towards making the Drimnagh area a sustainable smarter travel hub.
"These projects will offer great benefit to the area. In particular, I welcome the proposed works to introduce a Slí na Sláinte route in Lansdowne Valley Park. It is hoped that this will create a culture of walking in the area, helping to animate and bring a new energy into the valley.
"In addition, this project will be the foundation stone for turning Lansdowne Valley into a valuable resource for the area. The habitat and ecological value of the Valley means it has the potential to be used as an outdoor educational resource for local schools, and the further development will allow the restoration of the historic route from Kilmainham to Drimnagh Castle along the Cammack Valley".
