    Labour Party President Michael D Higgins has said that he supports efforts to have Galway chosen to host a Volvo Ocean Race stopover.

    The 1st of January 2010 saw the start of metered water charging in every school across the country. Based on a Labour Party survey of water charges, schools in County Galway face a hike of over 80%, and their counterparts in Galway city a hike of over 40%, in their water bills if water conservation measures aren’t introduced immediately.

    The Labour Party President and Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs Michael D Higgins has welcomed the commitment by the European Union to provide €122m in humanitarian aid and €307m in long term reconstruction financing to Haiti, but has urged the Irish government to give a lead in establishing such logistics as would lead to an effective, fast delivery of commitments on the ground.

    Michael D Higgins, Labour Party President and Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs, has condemned the twenty year jail sentence which a court acting on behalf of the ruling junta in Burma has imposed on Hla Hla Win, a video journalist who had worked with exiled media, notably the Democratic Voice of Burma which is based in Oslo.

    Michael D Higgins, Labour Party President and Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs, has called again for the safe passage to and from Gaza of those humanitarian activists involved in the ‘Viva Palestina’ organisation which is seeking to bring vital supplies, both food and medical, to those 1.5 million people living in what is little less than an open prison in the Gaza Strip. These supplies were initially to have arrived in Gaza on 27 December last, the anniversary of Operation ‘Cast Lead’.

    I very rarely saw Justin Keating get ruffled.  He communicated a kind of meditative strength.  There was thus a precision and deliberateness to the replies he offered to questions.  One had the impression of a great richness that resided in the person for which the question was inadequate. Those who experienced his friendship thus enjoyed a gift greater than words allow.

    Deputy Michael D Higgins has warmly welcomed the return to her home of Aminatou Haidar. Deputy Higgins said:”I am glad that Moroccan authorities have- belatedly- allowed Ms Haidar to return and that her 32 day hunger strike may now end. “I raised this matter in the Dáil this week.
