     Labour Party President Michael D Higgins has expressed his delight at the news that Galway is to host the final leg of the Volvo Ocean Race, and its closing ceremony, in 2012. The official announcement for this is to be made tomorrow, Wednesday 10 March.

     The Government’s failure to publish the promised 2008 annual report on military and dual-use exports is a clear breach of the undertaking given when the relevant legislation, the Control of Exports Act 2008, was put through the Dáil. During that debate, I sought and was given guarantees on transparency. These have not materialised.

    10 February 2010 I wish to raise on the Adjournment the following matter: “The urgent need to assist those who had  begun to return to education through the Back to Education Scheme and upon whose initial application to the Mature Access programme it was made clear that such access was possible if they were deemed eligible for the third level maintenance grant and the Back to Education allowance, and who made such applications on the premise that both these payments would be available only to find that this is no longer the case, which will make the continuation of third level courses simply impossible for many students.” Michael D Higgins -Galway West

Higgins had asked the Minister for Transport on the 10th of February whether action had been taken on upgrading the N17 on the Galway Mayo border, and the Minister swiftly deflected all responsibility of the tragedy and the need to upgrade the road onto the National Roads Authority.
