Labour Party President Michael D Higgins has said that he supports efforts to have Galway chosen to host a Volvo Ocean Race stopover.
Deputy Higgins said:” Last year’s event reflected great credit on those who organised it and achieved Galway being chosen. The event itself was a spectacular success with an enormous participation, not only from Galway but from all over the country and from abroad.
“The fact that there was such a significant cultural component, enjoyed in safety on the waterfront, was a further endorsement of the possibilities of the city. With proper planning and respect for creativity, the event constitutes an example of what the future can bring, not just in commercial terms but in the sense of participation and community involvement.
“The decision which government must take this week does indeed involve making a commitment in straitened times, but there are very few projects which are guaranteed to give such a high return within such a short period of time. I am happy to lend my support to this project and urge the government to decide in the positive.”
