The Leader of the Labour Party, Deputy Eamonn Gilmore, recently appointed me to the position of Labour Party Spokesperson on the Marine. Coming from a coastal constituency, I am accuately aware of the important role the sea plays in sustaining many communities throughout Ireland. The ocean economy currently contributes some €3 billion per annum to Ireland’s GNP when one takes account of income from fishing, aquaculture, food processing, shipping, tourism, IT, financial and other services.
