Axing Waste Collection - Not Good for the Community
Issued : Tuesday 27 July, 2010
Labour Party Senator for Cork South-West, Michael McCarthy, has expressed his concern at the likelihood that Cork County Council is to discontinue its refuse collection service.
Senator McCarthy said, ‘The loss of this service will have an impact on a massive number of people. Those on social welfare, the elderly, those with disabilities will all now be left to the mercy of the “market”.
‘I realise that this service has been loss making and is experiencing difficulties but I believe that it is a vital service for the community. I would resist any moves toward privatisation and I would call on Cork County Council to re-think this strategy.
‘Above all else, I would urge that the less well off in our community be considered in any plan to sell off refuse collection.’
