Areas : Bandon

Labour TD for Cork South-West Michael McCarthy has welcomed confirmation that Minister Phil Hogan has approved funding which will see the Bandon Sewerage Scheme project progress significantly.

Deputy McCarthy said: “I was informed by Minister Hogan today that he has approved the necessary funding to allow Cork County Council accept the tender for the Bandon Sewerage Scheme Stage 2 – Network Contract.

It means that Cork County Council can now complete the contract formalities with the successful tenderer so that work on the system can commence shortly. The tender, of just over €3.95 million, was submitted by SIAC Construction Ltd.

The contract will see the sewerage collection network in the town upgraded and expanded, and also provides for flood relief works with the construction of two storm water pumping stations. The Minister informs me that an advance works contract has already been completed to provide a foul and surface water pumping station at Watergate Street, rising mains, river crossing and associated pipe work.

The importance of the Bandon Sewerage Scheme for people in the area cannot be underestimated. Providing the Town with modern sewerage infrastructure, it is a long-anticipated venture and today’s confirmation that the funding envelope has been sealed is warm encouragement for the people of Bandon.”
