Michael contested the 2007 General Election with fellow candidate Cllr Jim Townsend.

Michael first got involved in politics when he joined the British Labour Party as an emigrant in London. He is one of the country's most experienced local politicians, having served the people of Kilkenny as a member of Kilkenny County Council for 20 years, and as its Chairperson on three occasions.

He also served as Chairperson of the South Eastern Health Board in 1991, and the General Council of County Councils (GCCC), 1994 & 2005. He is currently Chairman of the Labour Councillors Association.

His main priorities are.

•Improved safety at ALL schools.
•A fair pension for all, including farm spouses.
•Respect for our environment.
•Protecting rural post offices.
•Tough on Crime, Tough on the causes of crime.
