Bank Decision "Very Bad News" for Main Street, Blanchardstown

Issued : Friday 30 July, 2010

Dublin 15 local Councillor, Michael O'Donovan describes as "very bad news indeed" the decision of National Irish Bank to run its branch on Main Street, Blanchardstown, as a "cashless" bank.

"My information is that the National Irish Bank branch on Main Street, Blanchardstown will close at 12.30 on Wednesday 18th August.  It will re-open on Monday 23rd of August as a "cashless branch".  Business and personal customers will not be able to get cash or lodge cash from that morning onwards.  I presume that getting foreign currency will also be out of the question.

I greatly regret this decision by bank management.  Some customers will be discouraged and a further drop in the "footfall" in the village is, I believe, inevitable.

We have already lost the AIB building on Main Street.  When the bank moved out, the building was bought by the OPW, but still stands idle.  The Greyhound Pub across the road is closed as is the off-licence.

The decision by NIB to reduce its services to customers will not help us in our efforts to revive Main Street.  I wonder are the banks really serious about helping us through this recession?"
