Labour Councillor elected Chairman of the Primary Community Continuing Care Committe

Issued : Sunday 24 October, 2010

Labour Councillor Pat Cody was elected as Chairman of the Primary Community Continuing Care Committee and has vowed to use every opportunity as Chairman to highlight the drastic consequences facing County Wexford's population in the event of the Acute Mental Health Service Unit being abolished in St. Senan's hospital and relocating to Waterford.

Commenting after the election, Cllr. Cody said -- "I have already written to the Regional Director of Operations Mr. Pat Healy, stating the opposition in the community at large to the proposal to leave County Wexford with no acute admission facility and while staff and the public here embrace the principle of modernising the M.H. Service and integrating into the community, it is vital that any new arrangement must be easily accessible and must have public confidence, and as such should be maintained here in Wexford.

The Primary Community Continuing Care Committee (P.C.C.C.C) is responsible for a range of services in the HSE South Region, incorporating Counties, Kerry, Cork, Waterford, South Tipperary, Kilkenny, Carlow and Wexford. These include, General Practice, community based health and social services, services for older people and children, disability, mental health and social inclusion.

Cllr. Cody concluded. "It is important that all proposals under consideration are properly communicated to the main stakeholders and that their views are listened to. Unfortunately I feel this is an area that has not been thoroughly addressed in the reorganisation of mental health services for Wexford and I intend to seek to improve this aspect of business during my term of office, in the interest of patients, relatives and the community at large".
