  • First elected to Cork County Council 1985.
  • Re-elected 1991, 1999, 2004 and 2009
  • Chairperson, Cork County Council 1994/5.
  • Mayor of Cork County 2002-2003
  • Member of Council sub-committees on travellers, higher education, coastal management, roads, housing, waste management and development.
  • Served two terms as a member of Cork County VEC.
  • Chair of Labour's Women's National Council 1989-91

Birth Details:

  • Daughter of Eileen Desmond, former Labour Minister and MEP and of Dan Desmond, also a Labour TD and deputy leader of the party until his death in 1964.

Education:

  • Educated in Cork, Paula qualified as a solicitor in 1990, having returned to college as a mature student. She has since qualified as a Family Mediator having trained with the Family Mediation Service and is a fully accredited practitioner member of the Mediators Institute of Ireland.
