Cllr Paula Desmond welcomes County Council decision to make grit available to the public.
Issued : Thursday 2 December, 2010
“I share the frustration felt by many at the Council refusal to make supplies of grit available to the public for spreading on county roads and housing estates. I have been informed today however that the Council has changed its mind on this policy, following clarification that health & safety regulations will not prevent the public from taking on this work to make roads safer for themselves and their neighbours. Supplies of grit will be made available immediately through the local area offices for distribution to community groups.
I understand that there are not enough outdoor staff available to undertake the work directly. Existing staff are working extremely hard is very bad conditions to make main roads safe. However it is a bad reflection on the country’s legal framework if Local Authorities are so afraid of civil litigation that common sense is cast aside.”
