Diswellstown Road Speeding Must be Addressed
Issued : Monday 11 May, 2009
"Speaking to people in the Luttrelstown area it is clear that they are deeply concerned by the risks posed by cars speeding on the Diswellstown Road. They're afraid to let their kids go to the shops or to the park unaccompanied in case they are involved in an accident.
"The Diswellstown Road is a long, wide, straight stretch of road and cars get up to quite high speeds on it. There are ‘Go Slow' signs and a speed indicator on the road which lets motorists know the speed they are travelling, but they seem to pay no heed.
"Cars are often parked on the road, especially at school times, and the 37 bus terminus still operates on the road causing yet more danger. Motorists often don't reduce their speed to take account of these conditions and go speeding past. With two schools and so many kids in the area, this is a tragedy waiting to happen.
"I have brought this issue up with Fingal County Council on several occasions in the past, but there has been no improvement in the situation. Fingal have informed me that they carried out a survey but found no evidence of speeding. This beggars belief. If you stand on the Diswellstown for even five minutes you will see numerous cars speeding past. You can even verify this because there is a speed indicator which shows motorists' speed.
"The Diswellstown Road urgently needs traffic calming measures while the 37 bus terminus should be moved as has been long-promised. The Council can't afford to wait until there is a serious accident before taking action."
