Old School House Clonsilla
Issued : Tuesday 9 March, 2010
FINGAL COUNTY COUNCIL
COUNCIL MEETING
MONDAY 8TH MARCH 2010
OLD SCHOOLHOUSE, PORTERSTOWN, CLONSILLA
It was proposed by Councillor P Nulty and seconded by Councillor P Hamill
“That the Manager outline potential avenues to develop, protect and utilise the Old Schoolhouse at Porterstown, Clonsilla, for the benefit of the community.”
Local Objective 407 in the current County Development Plan states:-
“To preserve the Old School House and facilitate its rehabilitation into a suitable long-term use that is integrated with the backlands adjacent to the Royal Canal.”
This objective is also included in the current Development Plan Review.
The Old Schoolhouse is in private ownership. The area to the front of the School House is zoned residential and to the rear the zoning is open space. Uses that are permitted in principle include residential, community facility, childcare facility, doctor/dentist, education, holiday home, home based economic activity, sheltered housing, open space, places of worship and residential care home.
The vista between the Porterstown Road and the front elevation of the Old School House must be kept free of development. The building is a Protected Structure with landmark status in the area. The Planning Department has served an Endangerment Notice on the owner of the building specifying the works required to be carried out to prevent this protected structure from continuing to be endangered. The time period for carrying out these works has expired and the Council is preparing a prosecution in the District Court for non-compliance with the Endangerment Notice. In addition the Council has carried out some works to secure the building and will be seeking reimbursement of the costs of these works from the owner.
Following discussion the Report was NOTED.
