Pedestrians get Green Light at Last!

Issued : Wednesday 11 October, 2006

Fingal County Council is at last giving the go-ahead for a pedestrian crossing facility on the Swords/Malahide Road near the Millview Road junction, according to local Labour Councillor, Peter Coyle.

The residents living on the southern side of this busy road (including Talbot, Gainsborough and Gaybrook Lawns) have lobbied for some time for pedestrian lights at this location. According to Cllr. Peter Coyle, a crossing is required in the first place to provide 'safe routes to schools'. When raising the issue previously, the Council stated that they wanted to carry out a pedestrian count on the Swords Road. However Cllr. Peter Coyle argued, that with the volume of traffic, crossing is virtually an impossibility and dangerous at present and a pedestrian count would be meaningless.

At a recent meeting of the Malahide-Howth Area Committee (this week) where Cllr. Peter Coyle once again formally raised the issue, Peter Caulfield, Senior Executive Officer, Transportation Dept., reported:

"The Transportation Department proposes to include for the provision of a pedestrian crossing on the Swords Road/Millview junction in the current year's tender.

The contract is likely to be awarded in the coming months with work likely to be carried out in spring 2007. "

According to Cllr. Peter Coyle, this decision is very important to the many residents living along the Swords Road in Malahide. Hopefully it will encourage students to walk to and from the local schools, as well as being of general benefit to pedestrians in the area.
