Issued : Saturday 15 August, 2009
Statement by Alan Kelly TD
Minister of State, Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport with responsibility for Public & Commuter Transport
The fact that the youth wing of the party have voted for a positive position on the Lisbon treaty is a major boost to the party.
The Lisbon treaty represents the best hope for young people right now in that it we need to remain at the heart of a strong Europe in order for our economy to grow and jobs to be created.
The treaty also ensures that the European Union must work to gain full employment, eradicated poverty, combat climate change and ensure that the rights of workers are protected in every area of European law.
The youth wing of the party will bring tremendous energy to the overall Lisbon campaign as we seek to keep Ireland at the heart of a European Union that will deliver policies of the left.
I would like to warmly congratulate them and thank them for taking this position and hopefully we can work together to ensure a yes vote on October 2nd.
