Statement by Alan Kelly TD
Minister of State, Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport with responsibility for Public & Commuter Transport
"The value of the legal guarantees is that it clears the confusion. Given the fragmented nature of the European Institutions, it can be extremely difficult for EU politicians to communicate the valuable work they are doing
"The legal guarantees, which were agreed to by 27 countries, will clear up for many voters what were grey areas previously such as tax, abortion, conscription. The EU needs to reform how it communicates and gets feedback from its citizens.
“Under Lisbon, the EU´s role in every area of policy will be more clearly defined better structured and it will be seen to work in favour of its citizens, not against.
"Therefore it is important that we send out a positive message to our European neighbours on October 2nd. We must commit Ireland to playing a greater role in a stronger and more democratic Europe.”
