Ireland's position in Europe will be strengthened by Lisbon

Statement by Senator Susan O'Keeffe

Ireland is a better country and we are a better people because we have taken our place in Europe. The Lisbon Treaty provides the rules we need so that all Europeans can continue to enjoy a peaceful and progressive society, underpinned by the twin principles of equality and democracy, which are enshrined in this treaty.

Ireland can be part of a community which cherishes all its members - straight or gay, black or brown, Muslim or Christian or no faith - a community which has people at its core, regardless of their faith or occupation. This is the Europe that the Labour Party wants to belong to and wants Ireland to continue to be part of, a union which does not have a narrow focus based on one church or one set of ideals but which is mature and recognises that respect for all is the basis for prosperity and harmony for all.

Ireland's membership of the EU has given us, not just tangible benefits such as better roads, increased trade and cleaner air but it has broadened our mind and enabled a rich sharing of history and culture across the member states. We have grown up in the 36 years of our membership. With the Lisbon Treaty, we can enjoy many more birthdays of an Ireland at ease with itself and proud of its place in Europe.
