Hannigan thanked the Councillors for their support, adding: "I am honoured that they have shown the trust and faith in me to propose me for nomination. I intend to accept their proposal and I will be working flat out to secure the nomination and win the seat, in the process getting rid of this government."
Senator Hannigan ran for the party in the 2005 Meath by-election and in the 2007 general election.
