City Council must support local communities during cold snap
Issued : Friday 17 December, 2010
Statement by Cllr Henry Upton
As we face a further spell of snow and sub-zero temperatures Dublin City Council must act urgently to minimise danger for pedestrians and motorists.
I am calling on the Council, when they are treating roads and footpaths, to prioritise areas near schools, shops and community centres. People should at the very least, be able to get to their local shop to pick up the basics, and schools should not have to shut up shop.
I am also asking the council to deposit grit at the edge of estates so that residents can avail of it to clear their own roadways and footpaths.
I will be looking for assurances from the Council that area offices will maintain contact with resident associations to provide advice on clearing roads & paths, and where possible provide equipment and materials to members of the community.
In addition, the City Manager should now confirm that water will not be turned off in areas of Dublin South Central over the Christmas period.
We should be doing everything in our power to ensure that snowfall does not bring all activities in communities around the city to a halt.
