Sutton to Sandycove promenade & cycleway project must be prioritised

Statement by Cllr Oisín Quinn
Labour Party Dublin City Councillor and General Election Candidate for Dun Laoghaire, Cllr Oisin Quinn, has called on the City Council and Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council to make more progress on the proposal for a promenade and cycle way along the Dublin coast from Sutton to Sandycove.
Cllr Quinn commented, “The coastline is a fantastic amenity for Dubliners and provides a great opportunity to allow people to enjoy healthy exercise and a great view away from the noise and fumes of traffic. The development of a cycle path and promenade would further provide a great opportunity for people to cycle safely to schools and to work. “Yet the proposal risks being increasingly mired in bureaucracy and delay. “Dublin City Council is the lead authority with the responsibility for completing this project. The preliminary design has already been completed. However the Council now plans on carrying out a feasibility report followed by a further preliminary design followed by a further ‘draft preliminary report.’ “All of this will apparently take until the end of 2007 and involves planning for an 8-metre wide promenade. “This sort of bureaucratic delay gives local government a bad name. An eight metre wide promenade is totally unnecessary. Further, almost two-thirds of the route already has a walkway and cycleway in place (14.5 kms out of a total route of 22 kms). “This fantastic opportunity to put in place a piece of infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists to enjoy should be approached with common sense. I am calling on the Council to ensure that there is full and timely consultation with residents and other stakeholders and that the project is given the priority it merits.”
