HUMPHREYS SECURES REVAMP OF VOTING INFORMATION ON COUNCIL WEBSITE

Issued : Tuesday 9 March, 2010

Cllr Richard Humphreys, the Labour Party Councillor for the Stillorgan Ward, has welcomed the passing of a motion proposed by him at the Council meeting on Monday 8 March to improve and revamp the Council website regarding citizen’s voting forms and entitlements.

“With a Dublin mayoral election coming up, a bye-election in Dublin South, and referenda on children’s rights and a court of civil appeal, many of my constituents will be seeking information regarding voting registration.”

“Unfortunately the Council’s website has been badly out of date.  In addition the website does not make clear that some voting forms can be sent in to the Council by freepost.  I welcome the passing of this motion and the commitment from the Manager to upgrade the website in response.”

“In my view a citizen should be entitled to send in any electoral registration form by freepost.  There should not be a charge for participating in the democratic process, even if it is only the price of a stamp.  The Council have accepted that at least some forms can be sent in freepost.  I want to see this commitment go further and to ensure that all voting correspondence can be sent by freepost.” Humphreys said.
