HUMPHREYS DISAPPOINTED AT REJECTION OF PUBLIC CONSULTATION ON ROAD SAFETY

Issued : Monday 29 March, 2010

Cllr Richard Humphreys, the Labour Party Councillor for the Stillorgan Ward, has expressed his disappointment at the refusal by the County Manager to hold a formal public consultation process on the Council’s Road Safety Strategy.

“Road Safety is one of the most important functions of the Council and it undermines the work of the Council in this area not to seek the maximum public input and involvement in developing a safety strategy” Humphreys said.  He was speaking after a meeting of the Council’s Transportation Strategic Policy Committee at which the Manager presented a draft Road Safety Statement.

“I am concerned that this Statement is too general and lacks enough specific actions.  There are only 4 pages of specific recommendations in the Manager’s draft.  Compare that with the Road Safety Authority document which is 100 pages long and has 126 specific proposed actions, many of which relate to local authorities” Humphreys said.

“I am suggesting that the safety strategy needs to be beefed up.  I also believe that it would significantly benefit from a process of formal public consultation.” Humphreys said.

“I am disappointed that my proposal to have public consultation was rejected by the Manager at today’s meeting and I will be raising the matter again at the next Council meeting.  I would encourage any organisation with views on this matter to contact the Council’s Transportation Department and make their views heard.  However this will not be easy particularly as the draft is not yet on the Council website’s road safety page.”  Humphreys said.
