68 and 69 Bus Services Saved Thanks to Local Pressure
Issued : Thursday 2 June, 2011
Local TD Robert Dowds has today welcomed the news that Dublin Bus has scrapped their plans to axe the 68 and 69 Bus Services due to the opposition of people in the local community.
The campaign to save the 68 and 69 generated widespread support among the local community and was a prominent issue locally in the recent election.
In a statement, Dublin Bus stated that:
“Following a consultation period and extensive analysis of all feedback received, we are pleased to confirm that Routes 68 and 69 will continue to link both Rathcoole and Newcastle to the City Centre. Route 68 will provide improved connection to the south-east of the city including: South Circular Road, Leonard’s Corner and Camden Street with timetables that have been redesigned to be more customer focused with improved reliability.”
In reaction to the news, Robert Dowds said:
“These routes are critical for people who live in Rathcoole, Newcastle and Saggart, and in many cases are the only reasonable means of people getting to work or college in the morning. They are also very important to people in Clondalkin as they allow people to get into the village to do their shopping and to get into central Dublin quickly along the Quality Bus Corridors.
Over the last number of months, I met with Dublin Bus on several occasions and made sure they understood how important these bus services were for people living in Rathcoole, Newcastle and Saggart.
I want to thank Dublin Bus for their responsiveness to local residents’ concerns about the proposals and thank and congratulate all those who were involved in the campaign."
