Labour Party Councillor Seamus Ryan has called for Waterford Gardai to clamp down on the use of illegal fireworks in the city over the next two months. In the run up to Halloween, some residents in housing estates throughout Waterford city will be tormented by bangers exploding and fireworks blasting outside their doors," said Cllr Ryan. This along with ongoing problems in some of our housing estate is causing great distress for residents

Senior Citizens, citizens with disability or recovering from illness are particularly vulnerable at this time according to Cllr. Ryan."This can be very distressing for older people in particular, who are now spending more time indoors as the long evenings approach. In the past the constant explosion of bangers has terrified many of these people from even opening their doors after dark. Also these fireworks and bangers are having a detrimental effect on pet animals and in particular guide dogs."

"Furthermore, those involved in the sale of fireworks and bangers have an obligation to check these products for their safety. Each year, despite the best efforts of the Gardaí, imports of dangerous fireworks make their way onto our streets and can cause severe injuries to children.”
