Issued : Tuesday 21 June, 2005

Kilkenny Labour Party Councillor, Seán Ó hArgáin, welcomed tonight's election of Cllr. Marie Fitzpatrick as the first Labour party woman Mayor of the city.

Speaking at the Borough Council meeting at which he seconded Cllr. Fitzpatrick's nomination, Cllr. Ó hArgáin said that the new Mayor had a fundamental commitment to the principles of equality. He said her work as a community and youth worker in the city, in particular with disadvantaged young people would ensure these people would be at the heart of the work she does in the year ahead.

He also paid tribute to Mayor Fitzpatrick's determination in overcoming the death of her late husband Joe, and in caring for her five children, while playing such a huge role in the political and community life of the city, and said he believed Mayor Fitzpatrick would add a totally new dimension to the role of the First Citizen.
