Labour calls for people first in all future Hospital Plans for Donegal

Issued : Tuesday 20 March, 2007

Labour candidate Siobhan mc Laughlin is shocked at the proposed plan by this government to rush through the development of Super Private Hospital and clinics at a time when the people of Ireland and in this constituency are totally furustrated at the limitation of the sevices provided in the county.

While out canvassing in Milford, Letterkenny and North Inishowen, Siobhan has met with angry upset and very emotional individuals and families who feel totally let down by this government in the quality of service thay are recieiving. They all appreciate the expertise of health professionals but know that there is not the facilities and infrastructure at Letterkenny General to meet the needs of the residents in this county. This government is putting profit before people, we must put the health and welfare of our people first. Labour in government is committed to dealing with the health crisis and we will not be endorsing any selling of of public lands for private hospitals. Give us a break from the rhetoric Siobhan says and start paying attention to the needs of our communities, health is not a luxury, it is a right.

Health professionals have said to me at their homes, "How could anyone vote for a government that does not put people first." I have met women and families who are sickened by the lack of breast screening in the North West. Families concerned about the lack of affordable residential care for eldely in Letterkenny, patients exhausted form travelling to access health services. 29 new beds will be made available at Letterkenny General Hospital and while we welcome these these beds will not address the need or projected need over the next five to ten years. Labours Siobhan mC Laughlin invites Professor Drumm to come up and listen to our communities isssues and get in touch with the health needs in Donegal.
