Issued : Tuesday 8 May, 2007

Siobhan McLaughlin, Labour Party Candidate for the North East has wholeheartedly welcomed today's restoration of the Northern Ireland Assembly and the appointment of Ministers to a new power-sharing Executive.

The Buncrana woman said that she fully supported the 'Shared Future' Initiative that seeks to promote good relationships between the people of Northern Ireland and between the South. "This is particulary welcome news for the people of Donegal who have also been affected and blighted throughout these horrific years. We must remember the 3,500 lives lost and call on people in the North to fully support the PSNI and to work closely with the police to ensure the last vestiges of loyalist and republican paramilitary activity and criminality are brought to an end once and for all.
"It is the culmination of a long and painful journey and the parties and participants in Northern Ireland deserve enormous credit for reaching this accommodation." Ms McLaughlin acknowledged the Taoiseach and British Prime Minister who she said deserved special praise for the time and effort they have devoted to the Peace Process.
She said: "Today is a day for looking forward. We all must welcome the enormous progress that has been made towards Northern Ireland becoming the type of peaceful, lawful and democratic society that its people deserve."
