Cllr Thomas Redmond

Cllr Thomas Redmond is a 32 year-old Labour Party representative in Athy town council.

Thomas is one of the youngest Labour Councillors in the country - combining the energy and passionate politics of youth with more than a decade's experience in a range of local, national and international movements, from anti-war activism to local development issues and workers' rights campaigns.

Having lived in Athy, as a child and returning after university to start his family. Thomas is married to Evelyn and they have two children, Thomas works in the GU Outpatients in Tallaght hospital and is a commuter. He follows in the socialist traditions of the local Labour Party which have helped to sustain the local community for more than 50 years.

Since his election, Thomas has hit the headlines for his principled stances both on the Council and beyond. He has been heavily involved in campaigns for estates left in rag order by unscrupioious developers, in demanding that his council finally get tough on rouge developers. From derelict sites around the Campaigns for saving our local hospital, if it concerns the people of Athy Thomas Redmond will be there, giving a voice to the people that have none.

Thomas has a very strong interest in the environment and has called many times for the council to abolish a ridiculous charge for recycling as well as the sale of local amenity centres throughout Ireland.   Thomas believes in a sense of community and pride in his town and has reinvigorated and started many residents associations in Athy. He believes that there should be free internet for everyone, in his town and has brought this idea from his local council and it’s currently in the hands of Kildare county council.
