Councillor defends Borris Fair

A local councillor has defended the annual Borris fair which is held in the picturesque county Carlow town every August.
Labour Councillor William Quinn, hit back at critics of the 400 year old fair, which attracts thousands of people from around the country, after it once again came under intense scrutiny from local and national media last month.
Cllr Quinn was responding to comments from a fellow county councillor, who suggested that the fair was more trouble than it was worth and should not be held anymore. Fine Gael Cllr Micheal Deering, the longest serving member of the local authority, said it was unacceptable that the council had to spend a lot of money to clean up after the event.
In the immediate aftermath of this year's fair, the loval authority began a €15,000 clean up to restore the town to its normal state. " It's a disgrace that we should have to employ people to mind our own town when its being overtaken by people from all over the county" he said.
" The people of Borris have had enough"
However Borris representative, Cllr Quinn said the attention that surrounded the Borris fair was unbalanced after a similar fair took place in Cavan recently but saw little coverage.
"The people in Borris are proud of the fair, it is a 50/50 split down there and it is the people of Borris who will sort that out themselves along with their public representatives," he retorted.
