LW backs Saudi women drivers
16 June 2011
'Labour Women fully support the protest planned for Friday 17th June 3pm outside Saudi Embassy in Dublin to protest against the ban Saudi Arabia has on women drivers', says Katherine Dunne Labour Women Chair.
'Saudi women are organising a protest on Friday by driving cars in Saudi Arabia. Labour Women support their brave action to demand this simple right - driving a car. Women in Ireland supporting the Saudi women by staging this picket outside the Saudi Embassy in Ireland will hopefully in a small way show that the Saudi women have struck a chord with women around the globe.
'We can take for granted our freedom to drive a car, the most mundane of daily activities. Yet the religious police arrested a woman in Saudi Arabia for engaging in this most harmless activity.'
'Freedom that men enjoy is still not the reality for all the women. We hope the Saudi women will gain their freedoms and eventually take their deserved equal place with their men.
