LW proud to support Michael D for President

20 June 2011

Michael D Higgins is an exceptional person of whom we can all be proud. He represents everything that is best about Ireland and Labour Women is proud to support him in his journey to become the next President of Ireland.

Ireland has always valued education and learning and Michael D continues this tradition with the distinction and passion that prizes education as the bedrock of Ireland's success. Three Nobel Prizes in literature illustrate this literary tradition which is the rich and vibrant vein that runs through the heart of this country and for which we are known throughout the world. Michael D is Ireland's fitting emblem to represent this proud tradition. For women, education has been the forward path in life which has provided Irish women with the key to independence and freedom. Without education, women would be poorer and, without women, education would be sorely underdeveloped.

Ireland keenly knows the hardships of poverty and struggle. Ireland also knows that to struggle is to survive and Michael D has consistently been an advocate on behalf of those in need, who struggle to survive and his defence of human rights is at the core of his conviction. Like President Mary Robinson, he carries the bright flame for justice with a fierce and proud sense of equality for all. Labour Women are proud to join Michael D in supporting a forthcoming Somalia fundraiser, organised by a Somali woman, where again, he demonstrates his commitment to a balanced and equal life for us all.

Ireland' heart and soul is rooted in its history. Michael D carries the heart and soul of Ireland's history in his vision for future where equality for all is the seed for Ireland's glowing future. Michael D does us proud; he speaks with the voice of Ireland in a Real Republic - the essence of which is pure democracy, conjoined with equality for each and every one of us. An Ireland that we can, once again, be confidently proud of; an Ireland of equality that cherishes every person: every man, every woman, every child - we ourselves and all of us. This resonates with the hopes and aspirations of Labour Women because it makes for a better country; a confident country which cherishes all the children equally and nurturing them, through education and support, in realising their true potential.

Michael D is an unwavering feminist. His consistency in gender equality goes hand in hand with his passion for equality and inclusiveness. Ireland needs a cohesive, inclusive and strong voice to take Ireland out of the wilderness of now and into the future where we can again feel confident to call ourselves Irish. Michael D is that person, he is that voice. All we have to do is listen to be convinced that this is the voice of our future President who represents the voice and humanity of each and every one of us.
