LW Film Night a great night out
26 January 2012
Labour Women gathered in the Irish Film Institute for a fundraiser to raise funds for the New Women Candidates Fund. It may have been a Monday evening, but the IFI was teeming with people. A large number of them were clutching the distinctive ticket for the film 'Potiche' ('The Trophy Wife') which was screened privately for Labour Women.
The French film was perfect for the occasion. A mature women who has spent her years at home as a wife, being ignored by her husband, has to take over running the family factory when her husband suddenly has a heart attack and has to take a break. She improves the operations in the factory, making it impossible for her to return to the former life when her husband reappears and wants to take over again. He may manage to push her aside, but she decides to run in an election...the scenes of her canvassing were not lost on the audience. The trophy wife becomes a woman of force. 'What a terrific evening!' people said as they left this private screening.
