LW Lisbon launch brings out the sun

Issued : Sunday 13 September, 2009

neesa childers mep Nessa Childers MEP launching LW Lisbon Campaign

LW launched their Lisbon Treaty Campaign in glorious sunshine in the Mansion House, home of the Lord Mayor Cllr Emer Costello. Nessa Childers MEP and Joe Costello TD launched the campaign referring to the fact that 56% of women voted against the Lisbon Treaty in 2008. 'Women have concerns that are different from men's concerns', Joe Costello TD said. 'The Lisbon Treaty takes into account women and explicitly commits to equality between women and men.'

Nessa Childers MEP spoke passionately about her support for the Lisbon Treaty. 'I support the treaty not just as a politician but as a mother. I am a mother of two children, and I would not support this treaty if I thought it was in any way damaging to my children, or to anyone's children.'

Mary Upton TD also gave her support to the launch, and was happy to say that during canvassing for a YES vote she found many people in her constituency of Dublin South-Central in favour of the Treaty. 'I am delighted that so many people are telling me they are voting YES.'

Mary Flynn LW International Officer has been representing LW in Europe for the last number of years. Her many contacts are a window to Europe Labour Women appreciate, as networking in Europe helps us all to better develop models and ideas that can be shared. 'Europe and our European partners are an important element of what politics is about. Women in Europe will benefit from the Lisbon Treaty - we must now ask the people to vote YES. I hope the treaty will be passed, as it really is a very good treaty. If we don't pass this treaty, we have no guarantees how good or bad the next treaty will be.'

Labour Women would like to thank Lord Mayor Cllr Emer Costello for opening her home to the supporters of the Lisbon Treaty. 'I also want to be Lord Mayor when I grow up', sighed the 10-year-old girl as she enjoyed the sun in the garden. Just shows how important women role models can be!
