LABOUR WOMEN WELCOME SUPPORT FOR CHILD BENEFIT

Labour Women welcome the community and NGO support the Labour Party Motion on protecting Child Benefit has received.

Katherine Dunne, Labour Women Chair said: "Women from all walks of life are saying that there are better ways to tackle the hole in the public purse than targeting child benefit payments. Tonight some of the women will gather outside the Dáil to support the Labour Party's motion.

"To create a third level of taxation is a fairer, more effective way to ensure that those who badly need child benefit receive it and those who can get by easily without it are targeted. A blunt strike at all the recipients of child benefit is an ineffective, unimaginative way to hit everyone and is typical of this Government.

"We have choices in this recession. Ireland's income inequality is well documented. Our choice now is to re-balance that inequality by introducing fairer taxation, close tax breaks, and re-direct state funds to those who need it rather than those who shout the loudest. As a society protecting children must be a top priority."
