LABOUR YOUTH WELCOMES RELEASE OF THOMAS COOK WORKERS

Issued : Wednesday 5 August, 2009

The decision of the High Court to release the Thomas Cook workers is a positive one for them and their families.

We fully supported and will continue to support people in the pursuit of fair pay, proper working rights and the ability to negotiate with their employer a proper redundancy package.

The attitude of Thomas Cook towards their employees is totally out of hand and beyond reproach, let's not forget that their CEO paid himself a €7 million bonus on the back of these women and men. The way in which they were treated last Friday was a farce and the manner in which it escalated was nothing short of a disgrace.

We welcome the fact the TSSA and Thomas Cook have agreed to meet.

It is important that when there is an industrial dispute, that workers are given every opportunity to engage in a process of negotiation, that is both fair and just for all parties involved, especially those who are at risk of losing their jobs.
