Queens Student Union votes to boycott Coke

Issued : Tuesday 30 November, 2004

Queens University Back Boycott and use Coke Profits to Finance Campaign.

Coke Loses Another Legal Battle in Colombia

Queens University Student Council voted on November 25th of back the worldwide boycott of Coca Cola called by Sinaltrainal. The Unions decision makes Queens the third university in Ireland to lend its support to the boycott.

Queens University is affiliated to the British based National Union of Students. As the contract with Coca Cola is controlled centrally by the NUSSL the union will be unable to remove the coke vending machines for the moment. Ingeniously they have decided to use the profits from the vending machines to finance the boycott campaign work.

Meanwhile Coke has lost yet another legal battle with the union. Cokes attempts to have Sinaltrainal forbidden from recruiting new members has been overturned by the courts which have instructed the Government to reverse its decision made at Cokes request. The union had been prevented from recruiting new members by a Ministerial order issued after Coke had petitioned the Minstry.

This issue wont go away until Coke comes to its senses and meets Sinaltrainals simple but just demands. We are delighted with the Queens decision and also the legal victory in Colombia said a Lasc spokesperson.
