UCD Labour week

Labour Youth will launch the first ever UCD Labour Week from February 14th-19th 2005 in a bold challenge to the establishment elite in the college. The week will comprise a number of events, campaigns and discussions and will the core Labour values of equality, community, freedom and democracy.

The week will begin with a series of actions on Monday to promote the Boycott Killer Coke campaign. Students will be asked to sign a petition at the Blob (Arts) between 12 and 2pm to stop the sale of Coca-Cola products in non-Union outlets on campus and leaflets will be distributed asking people to spread the boycott, which continues to grow internationally. Tuesday will feature a number of anti-racism campaigns in light of the recent damning NGO Alliance Shadow Report on governmental racism and inaction and a speaker from the Residents Against Racism group will attend a meeting at 1pm in Theatre R (Arts).

Pdraig Yeates, former Irish Times Industry and Employment Correspondent and author of the seminal "Lockout: Dublin 1913" will give a presentation on "Lessons of the Lockout" at 1pm on Wednesday in E114 (Arts).

The keynote event of the week is a discussion on "Future Perspectives on a Left-Led Ireland." DCU Communications Professor John Horgan, a former Labour TD, Senator and MEP, will take part in the open forum along with local Councillor Aidan Culhane, John Baker of the UCD Dept of Equality Studies, and a number of other speakers to be confirmed. The discussion takes place at 7pm on Thursday in B101 (Arts) and will be followed by a social reception.

All the above events are open to all. Labour Youth will also run a stand at the Blob (opposite Theatre L in Arts) for the duration of the week with literature on all of the above topics and more. UCD Labour Youth will also launch its first ever publication next week, copies of which will be available at the stand.

The week will also feature a social event for members on Friday and conclude with a Special Delegate Conference on the European Constitution in the Teachers Club to decide Labour Youth policy on the document.
