Trinity votes to boycott Coke

Issued : Thursday 26 February, 2004 by Trinity

On February 26th students at Trinity College voted by 1816 votes to 1680 to stop stocking products of the Coca Cola corporation in the two SU owned shops on campus. Both TCD and UCD now no longer stock these products in their shops. This result was achieved in spite of the fact that earlier in the year various college authorities had prohibited the Trinity Labour society from putting up and distributing Boycott Coke posters and literature on spurious grounds.

Danielle McCormack of the Trinity Boycott Coke campaign said "This is an excellent result as Trinity students have shown their commitment to human rights for workers across the world. This victory will contribute to bringing more attention to the situation in Colombia and hopefully put more pressure on Coca Cola to meet the demands of SINALTRAINAL".

The result, following two successful votes in UCD in support of the boycott, clearly shows that there is a huge groundswell of support for this campaign among students across college campuses nationwide.
The news of the result reached the U.S. within hours. Following the lead of UCD and Trinity U.S. campuses are beginning to cancel their contracts with Coca-Cola. On March 8th the Carleton (College) Student Assembly voted to terminate its vending contract with Coca-Cola, which means the removal of 42 Coke machines from the campus.

And the boycott is spreading to schools in Ireland too. At the Labour Youth boycott Coke public meeting, students from St. Aidan's in Whitehall told how they managed to remove Coke products from their shop. www.killercoke.org
