Members of Labour Youth and the Crumlin Labour Party were joined by friends, family and supporters of Joanne Delaney on Friday February 10th outside the Ashleaf Dunnes Stores in Crumlin. There was an excellent response from passers by as well as extensive coverage from the corporate media including TV3 news and the major (non RTE) radio stations including INN and Newstalk.
The protest was supported by local Labour Councillor Eric Byrne, Labour T.D. Mary Upton and Labour Leader Pat Rabbitte in addition to a large number of local residents and supporters of Joanne Delaney.
Joanne Delaney is a 22-year-old shop steward, a member of the Mandate trade union, and two months ago Dunnes fired her for wearing her union pin on her uniform. And despite pressure from her union, they are refusing to take her back.
