At this years "UCD Fresher's Week", the UCD Labour Michael O' Riordain branch managed to raise its membership significantly making it one of the biggest Labour Party branches in the country. The branch almost doubled its intake of members this week claiming close to one hundred new members.
Daniel O' Neill, the chairperson of the UCD branch said: "After the recent election in which the party didn't perform as well as expected, it was suprising that we did so well here in UCD."
"The appointment of Eamon Gilmore as our new leader has clearly caused a stir amongst young Labour supporters and it is something that we welcome whole heartedly. For us, Gilmore offers new hope to a party badly disheartened after the election and I'm sure that whoever is our future deputy leader will also help lead Labour into the future."
"The fact that Labour is more popular with young voters than with the average voter is a testament to the hard work put in by Labour Youth members around the country.
"I know from experience that although the size of our college branches may be dwarfed by Young Fine Gael and Ogra Fianna Fail, we remain one of the most notable and active political youth organisations in the country."
