Carberry urges SDCC to Invest in Waste Prevention Facilities
Issued : Saturday 2 March, 2019
Aideen Carberry, Labour local election candidate for the Firhouse-Bohernabreena Electoral Area, has called on South Dublin County Council to further invest in waste prevention facilities in the county.
Figures recently released by SDCC have shown that expenditure on Landfill Operation and Aftercare is over six times that of Recovery and Recycling Facilities in the council area during 2018. Even when Waste to Energy Facilities are taken in to account, expenditure on landfill is still over twice as high.
“There is an ever growing movement to encourage individuals to reduce household waste. While this is a laudable endeavour, it must be acknowledged that council and state intervention will be required to further encourage this trend’ Carberry said.
“A number of areas could be examined by the council to encourage waste reduction including recycling, upcycling, refurbishing and maintenance facilities. This would ensure that landfill is only used as a very last option in the elimination of waste.”
“Targets to reduce our waste, both at an EU and national level, are only going to increase. Our county and communities could be at the heart of this movement if our residents are given the tools to be part of that change” Carberry concluded.
