Suggested stackable modular units on Bunratty site, Coolock, misleading

Issued : Wednesday 30 November, 2016

Commenting on reports of stackable modular apartments, Cllr Alison Gilliland said:

‘News articles today regarding the use of a site on the Bunratty Road, Coolock, for stackable modular homes for homeless families are misleading and need clarification’.

‘This site is the third and final phase of the development on Dublin City Council owned land between Bunratty Road and the Oscar Traynor Rd. One narrow strip of land remains and has long been identified in the Dublin City Council Housing Programme for 62 apartments for social housing. Dublin City Council this morning assured me that this is still the case.’

‘I have previous raised the long drawn out timeline (2019) for the development of this site given the fact that the scheme approved in principle by the Department of the Environment and Local Government. At last Friday’s Housing SPC meeting DCC indicated that it intended using a rapid build approach for this site so as to achieve a 2018 completion date. This approach was generally welcomed, particularly in light of the quality of the rapid build homes in Poppintree.’

‘The design for the units on the site has not yet been finalised, indeed it is only at tendering stage so suggestions that the units will be stackable and moved after several years is completely misleading and raising unnecessary concerns from local residents.’

‘Any final design for development on this site will have to be approved by the Council Chamber as will the use of the units build on the site. I am currently seeking cross party support to ensure that the 62 units will be for social housing and allocated through the normal scheme of lettings and that the design will ensure quality living for tenants. This scheme will include letting to some homeless families but also to those will medical or welfare priorities, those in over-crowding (Band 1) and those on the ordinary Band 3 list.’
