Local families left to languish in insecure HAP tenancies unless major state intervention to provide land for social and affordable housing is provided
Cllr Alison Gilliland, Labour Party, Tuesday 8th January 2019

“Dublin City Council’s housing output targets for 2018 - 2021 show it providing just over 3,500 new housing stock units to be constructed between the Council and Approved Housing Bodies and ac- quired through the Part V process (DCC Housing Report 17/2019). These units will use up 80% of all DCC owned land. Unless the state intervenes and provides state land for social and affordable housing thousands of families will be left to languish in insecure HAP tenancies."

“These targets fall well short of Dublin City Council social housing needs - with over 16,000 house- holds on the DCC social housing waiting list and another almost 10,000 on the housing transfer lists (Housing Quarterly Report July 2018). This means that many families and individuals will nev- er have the security of a Council tenancy.”

“My local area, Area B which includes Coolock, Artane, Darndale, Priorswood and Kilmore has the longest waiting list with almost 5,000 families/individuals waiting. Some of these families are living with other family members in overcrowded situations while others live in constant insecurity in the private rental sector.”

“The time it is taking to get housing build is exacerbating the problem. The Oscar Taynor Lands Initiative, approved by Dublin City Council in January 2016, a full 2 years ago, will not see a plan- ning application for another year! This is absolutely disgraceful for an relatively uncomplicated site that could have been fast tracked had the proper resources and energy been put in place. I contest that Minister Murphy sees this situation as a crisis at all as he has provided no tangible leadership to local Councillors efforts to progress projects.”
