50,000 Workers benefit from the return of the joint labour committees

Issued : Thursday 1 October, 2015

Brendan Ryan, Labour Party TD for Dublin Fingal, has welcomed the announcement by Minister Ged Nash that 50,000 low paid workers will see their wages increase due to the return of the Joint Labour Committees.

Ryan “This is a welcome step and it certainly would not have happened without Labour in Government. Labour has worked closely with the Trade Union movement to restore JLCs in sectors where wages and conditions of employment are below the norm. Under the previous system, the Labour Court issued Employment Regulation Orders (EROs) on foot of proposals from these JLCs. The Industrial Relations (Amendment) Act 2012 restored the statutory provisions in relation to Employment Regulation Orders and reformed the accompanying procedures which has allowed Minister Nash to make two new EROs today”

Ryan “Today 20,000 workers in the security sector and 30,000 workers in the contract cleaning sector will benefit from a pay increase from between 6.6% and 7.4%. Working hard and delivering for low paid workers is what Labour and the Trade Union movement are about and this is an important day for many low paid workers. I commend the work done by Minister Ged Nash on this. He has been a pro active Minister in delivering for workers rights.”
