Conference Motions

Session 3 : Planning & Local Government:

Motion 44 )

Conference notes the high number of derelict sites that continue to blight our cities and the negative impact these sites have on our communities.

Conference further notes that many of these derelict sites have remained in the same condition for many years and, sometimes, decades.

Conference notes that the current legislation on derelict sites has failed to fully protect our cities.

Conference calls on the Labour Party spokesperson on Housing, Planning and Local Government to introduce a private members bill that will:

  • Widen the type of properties that can be added to the Derelict Sites Register, including properties that are state-owned.
  • Increase the penalties on property owners who fail to maintain their property.
  • Make it easier for local authorities to carry out a compulsory purchase order when property owners fail to carry out remedial work or where the property owner cannot be identified.
