DECLAN MEENAGH
Labour area rep Declan Meenagh has said the reforms to the school admission process announced by Minister for Education, Ruairí Quinn, will lead to an easier, fairer and more transparent process for parents.
“I welcome these radical new changes announced by Minister Quinn to pave the way for a fairer and more transparent school enrolment process.
“Schools will now no longer be allowed to accept applications before October 1st prior to the year of enrolment. This will ensure a level playing field for all parents.
“I particularly welcome the decision by the Minister that no school may seek or charge admission fees for parents to apply their child for enrolment.
“On top of this, it will no longer be permissible for schools to conduct interviews with parents and children before enrolment, while parents will be provided with a simpler appeals system for cases where they feel their child has been unfairly refused admission.
“These reforms will remove the ‘soft barriers’ that can affect children with special educational needs, and will reassure parents that the process of enrolling their children in school will be fairer, more open and more transparent."
