Landy Welcomes Prefab Replacement for Schools

Issued : Monday 10 June, 2013
Areas : All Ireland

Senator Landy has welcomed news that Powerstown National School, Clonmel has been selected as one of the schools to be granted funding for replacement of their prefab units with permanent accommodation.

115 prefabs in 46 schools will be offered grants to provide the new facilities.

“This announcement made is to be welcomed by all” Senator Landy said. “There is the added advantage that these works will create jobs, this €15 million scheme could create as many as 300 jobs”.

In March 2012 when the first prefab replacement scheme was announced, a total of 1,543 prefabs were being rented in 591 schools. When the prefab replacement initiatives are completed, it is expected to have reduced the number of rented prefabs by 570 - a 37% reduction in the number of prefabs in our schools over just 2 years.

“This will be a tremendous improvement for both staff and pupils at Powerstown National School school particularly when the weather becomes inclement” Senator Landy said.
