96% of rental properties in Fingal fail basic inspection
Issued : Friday 1 August, 2014
Duncan Smith, Labour Party Cllr for the Swords Ward of Fingal County Council has condemned the results released by the Department of Environment showing that 96% of rental properties in Fingal failing basic inspection.
Smith “The results just released by the Department of Environment highlight the failure of the vast majority of rental properties in meeting basic standards. A 96% failure rate is a shocking indictment of the situation. The lack of housing supply is pushing many people, who would otherwise have wither bought or would be housed by a local authority, into the rental market. This report highlights the lack of standards in this market. In 2013, 381 dwellings were inspected in Fingal with a shocking 366 not meeting regulatory requirements.”
Smith “This report raises more questions than answers. Despite the high number of failures, there were no enforcement notices or legal proceedings initiated by Fingal County Council. I will be raising these results at the next meeting of Fingal County Council. With so many people forced into the rental market, it is vital that these dwellings meet the basic standards required. This is another strand of the housing crisis and one which needs to be tackled. It is imperative that landlords provide safe dwellings of good standard.”
