Secas Urges Council to Provide Safe Road Crossing for Children Attending Milford NS

Issued : Thursday 24 December, 2015

Labour Party Councillor for Limerick City East, Elena Secas, is urging the Council to find solutions for safe road crossing for children attending Milford National School in Castletroy.

“This is an increasing concern for parents and people living in the area. Children are the most vulnerable road-users and they cannot judge how far away a car is and how fast it is approaching. The Plassey Park Road is a very busy road especially at rush hours and it could be hard for motorists to see small children who are trying to cross the road between cars”, Cllr Secas explains.

“While Limerick Smarter Travel try their best and aim to work with schools to reduce car dependency and encourage other sustainable modes of transport, these road safety concerns can be a huge deterrent to parents and guardians allowing their children to walk to school.”

“I have been campaigning since elected in 2014 for a lollipop person, bringing this issue up with the Council again and again and I am determined to keep bringing it up to ensure that some kind of road crossing safety  is provided so that children can safely get to and from school”, Labour’s Elena stated.

“There is no doubt that Limerick City and County Council is dedicated to promoting road safety and I am delighted that the Council has now committed to undertake revised surveys of traffic in early 2016 along this busy road, which, as the Council explains, will allow examining the range of suitable options to enhance the safety of children crossing the Plassey Park Road from and to Milford School. I believe this is a step in the right direction in terms of dealing with unsafe pedestrian access to the School for children, as safe crossing for every child is in the best interests of everyone”, Cllr. Elena Secas concluded.
