NEW HOUSING BILL GOOD FOR KILDARE TENANTS & LANDLORDS

Sallins-based Labour Party candidate, Fergus Carpenter, has welcomed the new Housing Bill as a measure which will benefit both tenants and landlords in Kildare.

“Housing is a big issue in Kildare. We need solutions for social and affordable housing in particular. This new Housing Bill helps in getting people homes and making the system fairer.

“The Housing Bill will finally deal with the problematic rent supplement system which is not working. The bill will provide the legislation for the Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) scheme, which will enable people to take up full-time employment while maintaining some level of support with regard to housing.

“HAP will help ensure that all private accommodation is up to standard and that the landlord must be tax-compliant. Sub-standard private accommodation will hopefully be a thing of the past.

“The Bill will also introduce a new tenant purchase scheme. Finally, the reform of the process for the termination of local authority tenancies means that tenants who refuse to pay rent or who burden the other residents with their anti-social behaviour will be dealt with more effectively.”
